India vs Australia, 5th ODI: Australia beat India by 3 runs despite Tendulkar record (AUS-IND: 3-2|7)
November 5, 2009Man-of-the-match Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to reach 17,000 runs in one-day international cricket, and reached his 45th century, in his 435th ODI, but it was not enough to give India a victory against Australia on Thursday. He hit a superb 175 off only 141 deliveries including 19 fours and four sixes, as India chased and missed Australia's imposing 350-4 by 3 runs.
An opening stand of 145 with Shaun Marsh scoring 112 and Shane Watson 93 helped Australia rack up the huge total.
India was looking at a hugely unexpected win (19 needed off 18), when Tendulkar finally fell to McKay, caught by Nathan Hauritz. Later Praveen Kumar bludgeoned a six to leave the Indians wanting 10 off 10. Just eight was needed when the final over started, but with two balls to go, Praveen Kumar was run out. Put in to bat after India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss, Shane Watson hit 49 and took three wickets as the Aussies fought back in Mohali to win the fourth one-day international. Cameron White made 62 and captain Ricky Ponting continued his impressive form by hitting 52 in Australia's total of 250 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Before this match, teams batting first won nine day-night encounters at this venue, while teams batting second scored just five wins under lights.India were all out for 226 in 46.4 overs. Sachin Tendulkar top-scored for India with 40 from 68 balls, falling seven short of 17,000 ODI runs when he was lbw to Hauritz. Sehwag smashed seven boundaries off 13 balls before miscuing Bollinger to Watson at mid-off. Gautam Gambhir, who was hit on the neck by a pull shot from Ricky Ponting in the third ODI, was ruled out the match and replaced by Virat Kohli.
There was a security scare as barely two hours before the start of the match, seven live cartridges were found wrapped in paper from a rest room in the second floor of the stadium by the personnel of the bomb detection squad and dog squad. The police said the matter was kept secret as it could have created unnecessary panic among the people.
